Redundancy, Resin and Panda Muffs.
2012. Core blimey you’ve been a crazy year. From learning new skill sets (sculpting), producing and releasing my first resin figures with the talented mr Cris Rose, heartbreaks and heart-fixes (couldn’t find a rhymy word for heartbreaks) and getting made redundant before i’m 30 (not too sure why 30’s relevant, but I always imagined if I was ever to be made redundant, it would be when I’m heaps old) (holy crap I’m nearly 30).
A self-imposed yearly tradition, I like to write these year in reviews so that I can..
1) Sum up my year in 1 post
2) Get to talk about myself and not feel wanky
3) See a list of things i’ve done this year, which makes me feel like i’ve accomplished lots. Which is nice.
You can read my past year in reviews here, 2011, 2010, 1 year Londonversary post)
Lets start, shall we?
Lets get all the yukky stuff out of the way, so we can look at pretty pictures. I’ve been working at Kidrobot London for the past year and a bit, which has been pretty much the best thing ever. I’ve met so many amazing people (from customers who’ve turned into lifelong friends, to our dysfunctional
Kidlobot Rondon Kidrobot London staff, now-turned family), learnt so much about retail (which will come in handy when I take over the world with my own brand. JUST SAYIN’) and have had so much exposure of my own work by just being behind that counter.

Craig and our buddy, Dissected.
So when we got told late last year that the London store was to close, my heart sank. (my manager and I wrote an open letter to the shops fans, customers and family which you can view on facebook here) The vinyl scene in the UK is strong, and from my experiences, Kidrobot London was a hub for that scene, where like minded people meet, chat, exchange, and give manhugs (you fellas give rad manhugs).
I released my first ever resin figures, called “Podgonauts, Intergelactic food explorers!” with the talented Cris Rose. We created a world and storyline in which both of our characters inihabit. Here are some of my favourite designs we produced.
Panda Podgonauts edition A: Jumpsuit colourway
Panda Podgonauts edition C: Sriracha Colourway
Monkey Podgonaut edition A: Jumpsuit Colourway
1 off Panda Podgonaut: Lotus Bun
(there are still a few left over in my shop, www.podgypanda.bigcartel.com)
I also learnt how to sculpt this year! 2012 was all about trying to learn new skill sets to level up my customs. Using milliput and/or Super Sculpey, here’s some of my favourites I produced in 2012:
2.25inch Micro Munny set “Tiny Terrors”
“Boogers” Custom 3” Android
“Octavian REALLY likes pineapples” Custom 4” Kidrobot Kracka
“Painting my bro a shade of Panda” custom Giant Robot and custom Uglydoll Kaiju fig
“Little Swag” 3inch original sculpture (my first original hand-sculpted figure!)
I THINK I’M GOING BLIND
Building on the focus of blue pencil sketches in 2011, I wanted to develop a more recognisable doodley style in 2012. Here are a few blue pencil doodles which
killed my eyes I enjoyed:
“pandas pandas pandas ‘till my eyes bleed” 16inch x 20inch col erase pencil on wooden canvas
“alice entangled” 8inch x 8inch col erase pencil on wooden canvas
doodley 18inch mega munny, a work in progress! created for a live customising event at Kidrobot London in May.
PERSONAL STUFF FROM 2012! as told through photos.
SNOW IN FEB! (experienced falling snow for the first time! ^___^).
Went to Eastbourne (tried out being an old man for a day. I dig I dig).
Saw my first fox.
Modeled a bit (didn’t get far).
Skimmed rocks in Wales.
Tanned up in Garraf, Spain (this was the view outside our beach house. BE JEALOUS).
Froze in Stavanger, Norway. Went for work. Twice ^_^ (-8degrees and ALOT of snow).
Met this lovely lady :).
2013? FULL TIME FREELANCE!
So what’s in store for 2013? Well, with work at Kidrobot finishing up really soon, this means I get to concentrate doing PodgyPanda stuff FULL TIME! (hurrah!) I’ve got some wicked stuff lined up (which, I can’t talk about yet. I KNOW I KNOW i’ve turned into one of THOSE people) including ToyconUK in April, returning back to New Zealand via America in July (SDCC 2013!), planning for my FIRST AMERICAN solo show in 2014 and other awesomely fun things.
Big year. Big changes. Big things.
Here’s a photo of a panda muff I found at Artbox in Covent Garden.
I’ll just leave this here.
Thanks for your support.
RIP Kidrobot London.
